BELIZE ASSOCIATION OF PLANNERS (BAP) Membership Criteria

I CLASSES OF MEMBERSHIP

The Belize Association of Planners shall have six [6] classes of membership:

Honorary Membership shall be conferred by the Association on persons who, in the opinion of the Association, have made an outstanding contribution to the field of planning.

They shall not be required to pay dues, shall be entitled to all benefits of a Full Member, and shall be entitled to use the designation of Hon.BAP after their name.

Full Membership shall be ascribed to individuals who are qualified by academic training and experience to practice as Professional Planners in Belize. Admission to the Full Member status is recognition by the Association of a person’s professional competence and good standing in planning field.

A Full Member is an individual who meets all of the following minimum requirements:

  1. Is a Belizean citizen, resident or an individual who has resided and is residing and practising in the field of planning in Belize for at least two years, not necessarily consecutive;
  2. Has been sponsored by at least two Full Members;
  3. Agrees to abide by the Association’s Articles and Memorandum of Association and Code of Conduct;
  4. Agrees to maintain her/his skills, knowledge, and abilities in accordance with the Association’s professional development requirements;

In addition to the minimum requirements necessary to qualify for Full Member status, an individual must also meet one of the following qualification requirements: 

Qualification 1

  1. Have a university degree from a planning school/program which is recognized by the Association;
  1. Have attained and documented at least two years of responsible practical work experience in planning;

OR

Qualification 2

  1. Have a university degree from a school/program which is not in planning, but is in a related field such as sustainable development, architecture, civil engineering, geography, urban studies, environmental or resource management, or other field recognized as a related field by the Association.
  1. Have attained and documented at least four years of practical work experience in planning.

OR

Qualification 3:

  1. Holds status as a professional planner with a recognized professional planning association in the Caribbean or elsewhere.

A Full Member shall pay the dues prescribed by the Association and shall be entitled to:

  1. Vote in general meetings of the Association;
  2. Hold office in the Association;
  3. Attend and participate in conferences and other events organized by the Association, or on behalf of the Association, if so approved by the Association;
  4. Be admitted to this class of membership and use the acronym MBAP after their name.

For the purposes of clarification, all ten [10] founding members of the Association shall be classified as Full Members.

This class of membership shall be made available to individuals who meet the requirements in all respects of the Full Member status, but are residing and practicing outside of Belize.

An Affiliate Member shall pay the dues as prescribed by the Association, and is entitled to:

  1. Attend and participate in conferences and other events organized by the Association, or on behalf of the Association, if so approved by the Association;

  1. A Provisional Member is a person who meets the minimum requirements only for Full Member status and has initiated or is about to initiate the process to qualify to become a Full Member of the Association.

They shall pay the dues prescribed by the Association and shall be entitled to:

  1. Attend and participate in conferences and other Association events organized by the Association or on behalf of the Association, if so approved by the Association;

A Student Member is an individual who is pursuing a career in planning through academic study of which subsequent to such study, will be able to meet the requirements for becoming either a Full, Affiliate or Provisional Member.

A Student Member is an individual who meets all of the following minimum requirements:

  1. Has been sponsored by at least two Full Members;
  2. Agrees to abide by the Association’s Articles and Memorandum of Association and Code of Conduct.

A Student Member shall pay the dues prescribed by the Association and shall be entitled to:

  1. Attend and participate in conferences and other Association events organized by the Association or on behalf of the Association, if so approved by the Association;

An Associate Member may include any individual or organization who is interested in planning or are actively promoting the practice of planning in Belize or share similar objectives of the Association, but do not qualify for any other class of membership. This may include:

  1. Any individual whose profession or practise is other than those listed in the requirements of Qualification 2 of Full Member Status criteria for membership;
  1. Any individual who provide administrative or technical support to planners; or who employ and/or manage professional planners;
  1. Any individual or organization involved in planning processes, such as government staff or stakeholders, professional associations and non-governmental organizations involved in planning related studies in economic development, community development, justice, forestry, coastal management, environmental or resource management, or similar areas;
  1. Any interested individual or organization even with no direct role in planning;

An Associate Member is an individual/organization who meets all of the following minimum requirements:

  1. Is a Belizean citizen, resident or an individual or organization either residing in Belize or in another country;
  2. Has been sponsored by at least two Full Members;
  3. Agrees to abide by the Association’s Articles and Memorandum of Association and Code of Conduct;

An Associate Member shall pay the dues prescribed by the Association and shall be entitled to:

  1. Attend and participate in conferences and other Association events organized by the Association or on behalf of the Association, if so approved by the Association;

III APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP

An application for membership to the Belize Association of Planners shall be made on the appropriate form, and submitted to the President of the Association either digitally or to the registered office of the Association for consideration.

The application form must be accompanied by the following:

  • Required Application Fee [non-refundable] of $100.00 BZE
  • A digital passport photo
  • Certified copies of academic qualifications
  • Certified copy of Nationality or Permanent Residence [Birth Paper, Photograph Page of Passport, Voter’s ID, Social Security Card]
  • References and supporting documents where required

CODE OF ETHICS

The members of Belize Association of Planners (BAP) are dedicated to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and competence. The following set of guidelines, Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (Code), is to be used for the conduct of the members in fulfilling their obligation as a member of BAP (Member). The guidelines are arranged in two sections: Aspirational Principles and Rules of Conduct. Aspirational Principles are broad principles of conduct that all members shall strive to achieve. These principles are derived for the special responsibility that the profession of planning bares towards protecting the interest and welfare of the general public. However, an allegation that we failed to achieve our aspirational principles cannot be the subject of a misconduct charge or be a cause for disciplinary action. Rules of Conduct are more specific actions that are mandatory for the members to abide by. Violation of any of these Rules of Conduct may lead to disciplinary actions by BAP.
